Former CERGE Director Prof. Turnovec Has Passed Away

It is with deep sadness that we inform you that Professor František Turnovec passed away on Tuesday, December 10. Professor Turnovec was an important Czech mathematical economist who joined then CERGE (at that time, CERGE and EI had separate directors) shortly after its foundation in 1993 and served as its director between 1994 – 1999.

"We will remember professor Turnovec as a dedicated member of the academic community, a great organizer and an inspiring teacher and mentor," said CERGE-EI Director Sergey Slobodyan.

"František directed CERGE in the formative years and combined local and international know-how," added Jan Švejnar.

František Turnovec focused on the mathematical economy and related fields. Some of his latest work included articles on voting systems and their mechanisms.

His work has been published in numerous books and journals and referred to in many academic journals, including the Journal of Economic Perspectives, the European Journal of Political Economy, World Politics, the Annual Review of Political Science, Theory and more.

He was active in various academic bodies as well as on the editorial boards of many journals, including the European Journal of Political Economy.

Since the 1970s František Turnovec was a visiting professor at the University of Louvain, Institute for Advanced Studies and the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies. He was also a long-term professor at the Institute of Economic Studies.
