The Week of CAS at CERGE-EI: Exploring How Economics Shapes Our World

7 November, 2025

As part of this year’s Czech Academy of Sciences Week, CERGE-EI opened its doors to the public on Thursday, November 6, offering visitors an opportunity to experience how economic research helps us understand the world around us.

The afternoon program brought together researchers, students, and visitors from outside academia to explore the ways in which economics sheds light on real-world issues — from the functioning of markets to education and migration.

Who Are the “Lost Einsteins”?

In her talk, IDEA researcher Miroslava Federičová, Ph.D., explored the challenges of identifying and supporting quantitatively gifted students. Drawing on international datasets such as PISA and TIMSS, she showed how talent can remain hidden without systematic educational support and how Czech schools compare with those in other countries. Her presentation sparked a discussion on how education policy can better nurture potential across all backgrounds.

Understanding Markets Firsthand

The event continued with an interactive session led by doc. PhDr. Jan Zápal, Ph.D., who invited participants to simulate a “mini market” and experience how supply and demand interact — and how market efficiency can vary depending on participants’ strategies and goals. The lively discussion revealed that while markets often perform remarkably well, they also have their limits — particularly when systemic conditions are imperfect or when inequalities must be addressed.

Economic Integration of Refugees

Achim Ahrens, Ph.D., concluded the program with a lecture on the economic integration of refugees. Using Switzerland as a case study, he highlighted the obstacles refugees face in the labor market and presented research-based insights into policies that can help bridge the gap — from training programs to innovative online job-matching platforms.

Throughout the afternoon and early evening, visitors had the chance to talk with researchers, explore CERGE-EI’s historic building, and learn more about opportunities for study and collaboration. The event demonstrated how economic research connects theory with real-world social challenges and how open discussions can inspire new ways of thinking about policy and society.
