Meet Our Alumni: Karin Jõeveer

9 July, 2025

Karin Jõeveer, a CERGE-EI PhD alumna, reflects on the academic foundations that launched her career, the economic challenges Estonia faces today, and the decisions that will shape the future of the Eurozone in the new alumni interview.

As Associate Professor and Director of the Department of Economics and Finance at Tallinn University of Technology—and as a member of both the Estonian Central Bank’s Supervisory Board and the Estonian Fiscal Council—Karin offers a unique perspective on bridging research and decision-making. Reflecting on her PhD journey, she credits CERGE-EI for laying the groundwork:  “CERGE-EI was an excellent choice and served as a strong launching pad for my career. Beyond the academic preparation, what I value most from that time are the people I met.”

Karin shares insights into Estonia’s current economic challenges, including rising defense expenditures and difficult fiscal adjustments, as well as her role in selecting the next central bank governor. She also talks about the importance of communicating monetary policy clearly and staying connected to the CERGE-EI alumni community.
