16:30 | Applied Micro Research Seminar

Prof. Paula Stephan: “How Economics Shapes Science”

Prof. Paula Stephan

Georgia State University, Atlanta, GA, USA and The National Bureau of Economic Research

Author: Paula Stephan

Abstract: The seminar will be based on the author’s recent book, How Economics Shapes Science.  It will explore how public research organizations and scientists respond to incentives and costs. In many ways it is a good news/bad news story: get incentives and costs right, one can enhance productivity and use resources efficiently. Get them wrong, and there are severe consequences in terms of productivity and efficiency. Many of the examples used in the seminar are drawn from the US, the system the author knows best. But it is also a system that has been widely copied by public funding agencies in other countries, rightly or wrongly.

A LIMITED NUMBER OF PRINTED COPIES OF THE BOOK CHAPTER WILL BE AVAILABLE IN THE SEMINAR ROOM
