Peter Norman Sørensen (University of Copenhagen) "Selective Disclosure of Research Results when Seeking Recognition"

Prof. Peter Norman Sørensen

University of Copenhagen, Denmark

Abstract: Investigating a research question, a researcher amasses more results than can feasibly be reported. The researcher selectively presents those results that prove a talent for finding good results: An audience later compares the selected results to further knowledge about this research question, and computes a belief about the researcher’s talent. Selection behavior then depends both on the exact statistical connection of results to further knowledge, and on the researcher’s attitude to risk in recognition. These conditions determine whether selected evidence confirms or contradicts prior knowledge, and whether there is any directional bias. They also determine the informativeness of disclosed reports.
