From the original 13 students admitted into the program in the autumn of 1991, the student body of CERGE-EI has grown to over 150 students from throughout Central and Eastern Europe. General information about CERGE-EI’s student body, and student life, is available below.
The regional nature and diversity of our PhD program has been expanding in recent years. For example, while more than half of the students in the first two cohorts were from the then-Czechoslovakia, the number of non-Czech/Slovak students now far exceeds our Czech/Slovak enrollment. For your information, we have put together a table breaking down the countries of origin of CERGE-EI students. CERGE-EI students come from a variety of different academic and professional backgrounds, and a previous degree in economics is not a prerequisite for study at CERGE-EI. Students accepted at CERGE-EI usually have a strong background in mathematics and must have a firm command of the English language. A Master’s degree, or its equivalent, is normally required for study at CERGE-EI. While student life at CERGE-EI revolves around work in the classroom, it certainly does not end there. In addition to taking classes at CERGE-EI, selected students participate in the research effort of the institution as Research Assistants and in the educational sphere as Teaching Assistants, thereby improving their general CERGE-EI experience while earning a bit of extra money. The most qualified students are also afforded the opportunity to study abroad for up to a year at some of CERGE-EI’s partner institutions. CERGE-EI students have full access to all CERGE-EI facilities, including our outstanding library and our modern computer laboratory. Students in the dissertation research stage are also provided with office space in the CERGE-EI building. The Graduate Studies office provides students with a range of support during their stays at CERGE-EI. As students near the end of their studies, they are assisted in the job search process by the institution’s placement officers. CERGE-EI students also receive all of the benefits accorded to students of Charles University, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Central Europe. They are, for example, able to live in the Charles University dormitories and eat in the student dining halls. As students, they can obtain reduced-rate passes for the metro, trams, and buses in Prague. In addition, CERGE-EI students can take advantage of all of the cultural, sporting, and entertainment activities which Prague has to offer.
