Results of the “Projects in Applied Economics for Talented Students”

14 December, 2016

This year, for the very first time, CERGE-EI organized a joint educational and research project for high school students called “Projects in Applied Economics for Talented Students”. The aim of this program was to give talented students the opportunity to get acquainted with the basics of economics and current research topics and methods, as well as to pursue their own research.

Out of 60 applicants, 24 high school students were selected from 11 different high schools, mostly from Prague, but also from Ostrava, Frenštát pod Radhoštěm and Sokolov. In the last three months they came every week to CERGE-EI for lectures in economics and statistics with Sherzod Tashpulatov and Samuel Škoda, and to produce their own research work, supervised by tutors (Georgi Burlakov, Sasha Prokosheva, Eva Hromádková, Michal Šoltés, Iuliia Kuntsevych). The participants also received very useful training in presentation methods from Paul Whitaker from the CERGE-EI Academic Skills Center.

On Monday 12 December 2016, we saw the final presentations of the 5 research groups participating in the program. All 5 groups gave excellent presentations and the evaluation committee (Krešimir Žigič, CERGE-EI and Vilém Semerák, CERGE-EI, IDEA think-tank) offered feedback and awarded the winning places in 1st and joint 2nd place.

Thank you to all that took part. We would like to congratulate all of the participants and their tutors and lecturers on their excellent work, and special congratulations to the winners of the competition. Well done!
