Conferences and Workshops

CERGE-EI conferences and workshops serve many purposes. Not only are they a way for our researchers to disseminate the results of their research, but also they function as fora for analyzing current economic issues as intensively as possible. The input of ideas from invited guests is invaluable in answering pressing questions, and their influence on CERGE-EI faculty, researchers, and students is unquestionably positive. CERGE-EI conferences and workshops are not always just for seasoned economists: in an effort to blend the research and educational sides of CERGE-EI, some workshops are geared toward Ph.D. students and young scholars so as to allow their voices to be heard and their confidence to be built. Finally, conferences and workshops help to enlighten the general public as a whole on matters related to the economic transition and integration which they themselves are undertaking.

"Human Capital and Growth in Central European Countries"

CERGE-EI, January 19-20, 2001
Organizer: Nauro Campos
Source of finance: Phare ACE Grant No. P97-8085-R

This was a final meeting for the PHARE ACE Project coordinated by Nauro Campos. The project aims to investigate the macroeconomic aspects of the adjustment process and, in particular, to devise estimates of the speed and the costs at which convergence to the EU average can be expected. Based on the belief that the ten economies in question still share characteristics derived from their common legacy of central planning, the analysis limits itself to "transition economies", and it concentrates on aspects where this legacy is most tenacious. It focuses on the five countries constituting the first "wave" to investigate. Ultimately, the aim of accession is adjustment of the regulatory and institutional framework and convergence in per capita incomes of the candidate countries with the standards achieved in the EU.

Global Development Network, Prague Workshop

CERGE-EI, June 9 -11, 2000
Organizer: the World Bank - GDN, Prof. Randall Filer
Source of Finance: GDN

There were 64 participants from the Europe, Northern America, Latin America, Middle East, South Asia, East Asia and Africa.
The GDN held a workshop for the authors of the Global Research Project on Explaining Growth's regional papers. This meeting was convened in cooperation with the International Economics Association as a means to providing the authors with an opportunity for cross regional dialogue and feedback from top international experts. Nobel laureate Robert Solow presented the keynote speech, and most of the workshop was divided into smaller groups along the lines of the thematic papers. In the final working session the participants discussed the common issues among the papers, notable omissions in the papers, and directions for the next stage of the Global Research Project B country studies.

Four thematic papers were prepared for each region. The four themes are:
A. Aggregate growth
A focus on sources and determinants of growth. The purpose of this paper is to summarize what cross-country growth analysis has to say about regional growth experiences.
B. Markets and economic growth
In this paper, authors are expected to explore the functioning of key markets especially for labour and capital and to assess the extent to which they have hampered or contributed to growth performance.
C. Microeconomics of growth
This paper explores the factors explaining growth from the perspective of microeconomic agents. It will focus in particular on households and enterprises, and will cover such issues as household saving and spending on education, and firm and farm investment and productivity growth.
D. Political economy of growth
Certain policies will undoubtedly emerge as an important part of variation in growth experiences. The paper on the political economy of growth will investigate why countries pursued the particular policies that they did sometimes even in the face of evidence of their failure.
