About CERGE-EI - Facilities

The CERGE-EI Library

Our library was established in 1992 through the generous support of the Austria government and the Westinghouse Education Foundation. It contains the most extensive and up-to-date economics collection in Central and Eastern Europe, with about 40,000 monographs, as well as subscriptions to about 300 periodicals and access to 600 e-journals. As a result, the library houses a rich collection of contemporary economic literature focused on transnational economics. As part of CERGE-EI s outreach program, we are open to the general public as well as to students, faculty, and researchers from other institutions. The library is equipped with the latest computer technology, offers access to widely used databases and statistical materials, and is an official depository library of World Bank and UNCTAD documents. Access to materials not in the library is provided through cooperation with other libraries around the world.

The CERGE-EI Computer Department

The Computer Department staff oversees CERGE-EI’s LAN network based on both UNIX and Windows NT platforms. Facilities at CERGE-EI include a UNIX lab with high-capacity workstations, and a PC lab containing state-of-the art (Pentium III-class) computers. All computers are linked to the Internet with high-bandwidth lines. CERGE-EI’s computers support most major software packages and statistical software required for modern economic research, as well as the latest version of word processing and spreadsheet programs. E-mail addresses are created for all students, faculty, and researchers. Special arrangements can be made for those who require specialized computational support, including supercomputer access.

The CERGE-EI English Department

English is the working language of CERGE-EI, for teaching, research, and all research-related output. Because the vast majority of our students are non-native English speakers, we operate an English department staffed by native speakers trained in various fields related to linguistics. In addition to teaching the skills needed to produce publication-quality research written in academic English, we assist students and researchers in editing their papers.

The CERGE-EI Building

Located at Politickych veznu 7 in the heart of historic Prague, our building is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The corridors and lounges of the building are alive with intellectual activity late into the evening and on weekends. A dining facility in the CERGE-EI building serves lunches and is used for coffee breaks every morning, providing opportunities for informal discussions among faculty, researchers, students, and staff.
